AN INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE (HI)STORY

 The (hi)…

The V for Vendetta main character V, is inspired by the Gunpowder Plot: an English group of thirteen Catholics tried, the 1605, to destroy the United Kingdom Parliament in order to finish with the Catholic persecutions by the Jacob I king. They pretended to install the disorder and the chaos in the British socio-political environment and get, thus the establishment of a more favourable political regime for the Catholic community. The day before for the planned plot, the 4th of November of the 1605, Guy Fawkes one of the conspirators, was found in the corridors under the Parliament with many barrels which contained gunpowder. He was imprisoned, tortured to make him to explain the plan, and afterwards, he was hanged. The film starts remembering this historic event.

The… story

It is located in the future England. The country is governed by an dictatorial and ultraconservative fascist party which name is Norsefire lead by Adam Sulter. Evey Hammond is a worker for the British Television Network, the main private channel (like BBC, ;-) . The curfew is imposed in the country and nobody can go outside after curfew time. Despite of this, Evey decides to go out and she is attacked by some of the secret police members. But she is lucky, the villain appears on the scene, the man under a mask,V, saves her:

Evey: Who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what, and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey: Well, I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I’m not questioning your powers of observation, I’m merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.”

He brings her to see the destruction that he had organized of the Old Bailey building. The next day the regime informs by the BTN that the demolition was already planned. But V hijacks the BTN and sends a message were he presents himself like the author of the terrorist attack and invites the population to follow him the 5 of November of the next year, the date on which he plans to destroy the Parliament Houses.

V: This concert is dedicated to Mrs Justice in honour of the holidays she seems to be taking.”

The police get into the BTN building and tries to catch V, but Evey saves him. V, at the same time, saves her and brings her to his subterranean home. Since this moment she cannot be free because if she were, V could be in danger. But she finds a way to escape from V and she tries to refuge herself in Gordon Deitrich home,  her friend and her boss in BTN. She discovers then, that he is also working against the regime. One night, the police gets into his home and catch him for imprisonment. Evey, this night, is also caught and imprisoned. She is submitted to hard tortures in order to find where V is.

In prison her only consolation is a letter written by Valerie, a woman who was suffering, some time ago, the same situation Evey is having now. In this letter Valerie explains her life as a lesbian one.

Evey is a strong one and she will not reveal where they could find V. She gets the freedom and then, she discovers that her captor was, in fact, V. She leaves V but she promises him to come back to visit him before the 5th of November.

 ”V: Evey, with V, of course…
Evey: What do you mean?
V: That me, like God, or gambling, nor do I believe in coincidence”.

A police inspector, Eric Finch, is following the V’s case. He starts to find a relationship between the man of the mask and the victims killed by the government. A beggar arranged the inspector to have a meeting where the beggar tells him that twenty years before the present government organized a bacteriological attack around the country to get the power by provoking the fear feeling to the population.

V was one of the prisoners of Larkhill, where they used to practice scientific human experiments. The name V comes from the number, in Roman characters, of his cell. V is the only prisoner that could survive after this experimental genocide, and he is also who destroyed the place and who could scape, even if he had all the body burnt (that is the main reason why he wears a mask) because the explosions. After this talk, the inspector Finch realises what is going to happen. So many popular revolts are taking place in London because the murder, by a policeman, of a child who was wearing a Guy Fawkes mask. The chaos has started.

The 4th of November Evey goes to visit V who shows her a whole train full of explosives that is going to destroy the Parliament Houses. But V thinks this is not his decision and he delegates her the Parliament destruction. Afterwards, V goes to fight against Peter Creedy, the British secret police boss.

Some time before, Creedy had promised V, to kidnap Sulter, the leader, to be killed if V, as an exchange, accepts to be caught by Creedy. The leader then, is already death but V is not going to follow his promise and he kills all the policemen there are, also Creedy. After this fight V is deathly hurt and he goes where Evey is and he confess to her how he loves her. She leaves his body in the train where the explosives are. When she is almost activating the train the inspector Finch discovers her and he tries to stop her, but despite of that, he agrees because he already knows what the government did.

The population had an appointment that night, all of them go out to the streets surrounding the Parliament, wearing Guy Fawkes masks that V had distributed through all the city. The army which is waiting for them in the Parliament area, has to drop the guard. At midnight, Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture becomes the soundtrack of the Parliament destruction.
